Benefits of Cuticle Oil

Well-manicured hands are part of a good grooming regimen. Cuticles can dry, crack and split, the result of harsh weather and drying dish soaps. Daily care with cuticle oil can help restore the delicate area of the cuticle back to health. Some cuticle conditions are an indication of illness that should be assessed by a doctor or other health care professional, according to MayoClinic.com.

Cuticle oil can help nourish dry cuticles. Different oils can replace lost nutrients and fill in cracks with emollients. Jojoba oil is similar to the skin's natural sebum and will replace lost oils or dissolve excess oils, according to an April, 2001 issue of CBS Money Watch Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine. Certain oils when applied to the cuticle also can balance skin, treat infections and help heal the skin, according to the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy.

Moisturizing

Cuticle oil moisturizes the cuticle and parts of the nail, which keeps the cuticle from drying out and cracking. MayoClinic.com recommends moisturizing the cuticle several times a day, especially after washing your hands or when your hands have been immersed in water. Apply cuticle oil in evening before bedtime and wear cotton gloves to help the oil soak into the cuticle during the night.

Protecting

Paronychia is a skin infection around the nails. It can result from trimming the cuticles too short or cracks in the cuticle from excess dryness. Bacterial infection can cause red, swollen areas around the nail at the cuticle, according to the National Institutes of Health. Hangnails and injury to the cuticle can enable bacterial infection to occur rapidly. Paronychia can be painful; pus-filled blisters can appear at the site of infection.

Cuticle oil reduces the possibility of bacterial paroncychia by keeping the cuticle moist, preventing hangnails and dry cracked cuticles. Using cuticle oil that has anti-bacterial properties will stop infection before it starts. The National Institutes of Health recommends keeping the cuticles moisturized; practice proper care for cuticles and nails and do not cut or use cuticle removers. Cuticle removers can damage the skin around the nail and provide an entry point for bacteria and fungi.
